A chemical industry expert is warning against the “blunder” of politicians who suggest we should all just be happy to go back to using chemicals without ever having to worry about them, because we have to “be very, very careful” about their long-term health.
Chemical industry expert and former MP David Lloyd told the BBC that a lot of people have been fooled by the media’s narrative of a “bromance” between the industry and politicians.
“The big mistake people are making is to believe that we are just going to put up with it,” he said.
He added that he believes the public should be warned about the dangers of chemicals, and said that there was a danger that they might have to face their own personal health problems to stop the spread of chemical-related illnesses.
Dr Lloyd said that it was “not just” politicians who were making such an irresponsible statement.
The UK has one of the highest rates of cancer and respiratory diseases in Europe, with more than 1,400 people dying from them each day.
In addition to cancer, Dr Lloyd also warned that there is an increase in respiratory diseases such as pneumonia, and he said that the government needs to make the situation much worse.
“We’re not going to get this right,” he added.
If the UK continues to put forward this false narrative that we should just be content to be happy with chemicals in our homes and our bodies, the public will not just be in danger of being put at risk, but will also be at risk of having to choose between the health of their loved ones and the health and well-being of their own family members, Dr Marshall added.
The report is published on Tuesday (16 November) in the journal Science Advances.
